Based in Charlottesville, Virginia, Colby’s Crew Rescue is a nonprofit organization founded in 2021. Colby’s Crew Rescue aims to nurse abused and neglected horses back to health as well as save horses from being slaughtered.

The organization began as the result of the organization’s founder rescuing a horse, Colby, from the slaughter in 2020. The horse had experienced neglect and abuse and had developed a fear of humans. She worked hard with Colby to restore the horse’s physical and mental health. Inspired by the bond that formed between them, the nonprofit was launched.

Today, the organization rescues horses in multiple states, from those whose survival is uncertain to healthy animals. The organization treats and retrains the horses medically and psychologically, and finds homes for them. If a horse cannot be saved, Colby’s Rescue Crew arranges for the horse to be compassionately euthanized.

The organization has taken on this mission to rehabilitate or compassionately euthanize horses to become advocates of eliminating equine inhumane treatment. It has harnessed the reach of social media across TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram to become the largest horse rescue organization nationwide. It has also received a Platinum rating on guidestar.org, a site that provides potential donors with important information on nonprofit organizations.
